Dr. Thomas Hanitzsch, born 1969 in Dresden, Germany, is Professor of Communication Studies (with an emphasis on journalism) at the Institute of Communication Studies and Media Research, Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich, Germany. After two years of working as a reporter and editor for a local newspaper, he studied Journalism, Arabic Studies & Oriental Philology and Indonesian Studies at the University of Leipzig (Germany) and Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia). In 2004, he completed his doctorate at the Ilmenau University of Technology. Here, he held academic positions as a Research Assistant and Assistant Professor between 2002 and 2006, and as Assistant Professor at University of Zurich from 2006 to 2009. Dr. Hanitzsch is the founder of the ICA Journalism Studies Division and co-editor of the Handbook of Journalism Studies (Routledge, 2009).
